Equipment - Saddles

Why are soft saddles often less comfy than hard ones?
Saddles need to support as well as cushion. The design of a saddle should be such that it supports the bones of the pelvis at the 'isceal tuberosities' and cushions the delicate tissue around the area. Often, overpadded saddles are less comfortable because they do not provide support where it is needed and are too bulky to be accommodated without rubbing the inside leg. Although racing saddles are often said to be like 'sitting on a razor blade', this is usually because cheap saddles are being looked at. At the end of the day, Tour de France riders sitting on a saddle for seven hours a day would not sit on uncomfortable saddles!
